Just when you get the Christmas decorations put away, it is time to get ready for LENT!
Wednesday, February 6th is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten season for our church. (See schedule for Ash Wednesday masses on the reverse of this page). Entering the church on this day and every day during Lent, the most notable thing is not what you see, but what you don’t see. No flowers or decorations of any kind. This is symbolic of making Lent a desert time, a time to lessen distractions so that one may take time to reflect, repent and renew the spirit.
Traditionally, many people decide to “give up” something, such as a favorite food. This is still a valid Lenten pursuit, however, without the right intent, giving up your favorite ice cream may not exactly foster spiritual growth. This Lent, rather than giving something up, perhaps we ought to think about what we can add to our lives. To quote Mother Theresa, “doing small things with great love”, can lift the spirits not only of the recipient, but of the giver as well and can make Lent a true time of spiritual renewal for oneself and for others.
This Lent, with your children, think about those small things you can be doing for your family, friends, neighbors, teachers and all the people you come in contact with on a daily basis: the grocery store clerk, bank teller, mailman, etc. Just giving someone a smile, acknowledgement or recognition can do much to make the lives of others easier. Who knows, that grumpy bank teller may be a long suffering caregiver for an aging parent; a smile of thanks, could make his or her day.
